The only way to achieve greatness as an artist in the past was to be signed to a Major Record Label. Bands and Artists battled it out on the grungy streets of key cities building their following in the gritty clubs based solely on their own blood, sweat and tears along with their dogged determination.

The record contract was the golden ticket, reserved only for the very elite, very connected, very talented, or extremely lucky. Independent labels, like independent movies were buried deep underground and enjoyed limited success.

Then, the internet came along and changed everything; changed the face of music as we knew it. Music was being downloaded, being shared and the industry was in an uproar.

DJ’s were affected by the digital domination. CD-J players were introduced and soon began to dominate the market. The clubs had to expand their booths to fit the new, sleek CD-J’s snugly next to the turntables. Major DJ’s switched from all vinyl to incorporating Cd’s and mp3’s into their formats. Some completely ditched the rich, but cumbersome vinyl in favor of traveling light with a simple CD case or laptop.

Indie labels began to blossom with more and more added each year. The main draw is that there are so many favorable reasons to have an independent label. Artistic control, for one, is key. Having control over your own vision, your own creativity is paramount. You are thus allowed to put your signature stamp on everything you do, whether you are creating your own original track or re-mixing another’s.

The internet, via digital download networks like Beatport.com, allows you to distribute your music in a cost-efficient manner while retaining ownership and control over your releases via your own label. No longer do the major record companies have dominant control over the next big hit. It can rise like a phoenix from the ashes to major prevalence via the planet-altering World Wide Web.

Although I co-work and produce with other labels, having my own label, Original Cin Music, affords me the freedom to artistically express myself as an Artist, a Producer, a Writer and a DJ.
